Evgeny Voronovsky — «Neiromuzy: genealogy and basic principles»
On December 4th, the HSE CREATIVE HUB held an annual conference of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the ICU School of Design of the USE, where we discussed how new technologies affect the creation of compositions and the practice of listening to them.
Rules for the use of artificial intelligence in music
Music is central to human life. Humanity and music are inseparable. Technology has long supported the creative expression of human beings, and the constant application of artificial intelligence has contributed to the development of human creativity. Human creations must be respected and protected. Transparency is a prerequisite for trust in artificial intelligence and its responsible application. The points of view of music performers, songwriters, composers and other artists should be taken into account and respected. [According to the principles], they are proud of helping to translate music into reality.
Three «continuous principles» for working with AI
1 Licensing to work only with licensed models. Partners must recognize the value of copyrights. 2 Courts of Justice in Economic Valuation. Conditions must reflect the real cost of music. 3 The law is the choice of artist (Opt-in). The use of the artist’s name, image, voice or likeness in new I.I. songs is possible only with his explicit consent.
Commercial use
Can the music created by I.E. be used commercially? Yes, many AI music generators offer free licences that allow commercial use. However, it is important to verify the conditions for licensing each instrument, as some may require subscriptions or credit to a platform for commercial use. IE generators use a watermark, which is defined automatically by stripping platforms, and may have problems monetizing and authorizing content. Many music generators are also trained in unlicensed datasets without notification to the right holders of phonograms, which also makes the use of music created in these neuronets illegal. The sound watermark is resistant to converting files into other formats, to compressing, to changing effects, so if you plan to monetize content and download it into tremor services, it’s important to use subscription neuronets with full access to a license that allows commercial use. For example, Udio users are not allowed to download the tracks on striming; Suno users can only do so on a paid subscription.
The Bandcamp Striming Platform has published a policy of controlling generic music. The company stated that it seeks to protect and support the community of musicians and their listeners. «Today, we are strengthening our mission by formulating a policy on the generational AI so that musicians can continue to create music, and fans were convinced that the music they found on Bandcamp was created by people.» Two key points: «Audiences created entirely or to a large extent by AI are prohibited;» IA instruments that simulate styles or other performers according to existing rules that prohibit impersonation and infringement of intellectual property rights cannot be used. Now, any user can write to the support service to check the music material if they run into the I.I. content. Bandcamp noted that it reserved the right to delete any music if there was a suspicion that it was created with the help of AI.
