Hugo was very concerned about the condition of the monuments of the medieval architecture of Paris, about which he wrote a lot in the periodic press. At the time of writing, «The Cathedral of the Holy Mother of Paris» his building had fallen, was about to be rebuilt or destroyed. The book’s popularity has kept the cathedral intact and made it the national domain of France.

The Church of Paris is considered to be a classic of French literature and one of the main books of Romantic literature. The multiplayer composition, which includes playground jokes, street thieves, gypsies, beggars, the higher clergy and even the king himself, complex convulsions, unexpected twists of the plot, makes the novel a kind of epic theatre on which the story of France appears to unfold.
